'Moore's Law' (Intel cofounder Gordon Moore) states that the number of transistors on computer chips doubles every 18 months. Not only are there more transistors per chip, he noted, but as they get smaller, speed increases, and power consumption and cost-per-bit become lower. Moore's Law is an exponential relationship, and it has held up for 40 years.
